Sometimes, you won’t need to turn to anyone when coming up with a plan, as in the case of Ms. Tran My Hang, a journalist who chose to spend a year traveling around the world.
Ms. Tran My Hang
At her age, most women want to find stability in one place (get married, get promoted at work), but she wants to go… around the world.
I especially love life on the road – it’s the whole reason for this long trip, and every short trip before it.
I think if given nearly enough opportunities, the best thing we can do for ourselves – is to do what we really want.
From the beginning of your journey until now, how many places have you visited?
I’m only in the third month of my journey.
Did your decision encounter any objections from family or friends?
The best thing for me is that my friends and family help me immensely.
Is there a story you encountered along the way that you want to share with everyone?
There are so many, it’s impossible to tell them all in a few minutes.
Until now, the most special thing I have seen is the kindness of people.
Did you encounter any difficulties along the way?
This morning I took a walk along the beach with Gail, a very special woman.
I asked Gail if, during those decades, she ever felt the burden of separation and loss was more than she could bear.
Gail’s answer is exactly what I thought.
Although Ms. My Hang affirmed that she considers traveling to be a very personal experience, her story will certainly help many people feel more confident when setting out.
That doesn’t mean we discount those who this year decide to spend more time with their families.
